Rebecca Van Gulik GBS Recovery
Donation protected
Rebecca Ferguson needs donations for rehab and recovery in lieu of flowers, balloons and casseroles! Those of us closest to her are just as guilty as she is on betting that nothing like this could happen to Rebecca. She did not plan for an illness requiring skilled nursing care to recover fully.
It would be a real bummer if funds got in the way of Rebecca’s full recovery which is very, very possible.
What Rebecca has isn’t a deadly disease. Two weeks ago Rebecca was competing for the title “Portland’s Funniest Person” at Helium Comedy club. She was doing hot Pilates and cross-fit training 5 night a week Rebecca was building a fence with her son Matt last week after work and realized she was losing feeling in her extremities and her face. By the next day she was unable to walk and is now pretty immobile in St Vincent’s with a breathing and feeding tube. She is shocked, pissed and grateful that what she has isn’t likely to kill her.
But oh… what is yet to come for our brave and altruistic and funny friend and loved one.
GBS (Guillan Barre’ Syndrome) doesn’t kill you. Your own immune system starts chomping away at the sheaths around your nerves thinking the very protective membranes are foreign bodies to be destroyed. It is very painful as the nerves are raw especially in her back. Her own systems have been fooled into attacking her mobility. At the end of the active stage of the disease (up to four weeks) much of those sheaths can be rebuilt by your body and your immune system can be smacked into doing the right thing. It takes lots of rehab, medicine and therapy. Rebecca has received the immune cells of a thousand people to help knock some sense into her immune system. We need to step up and help too!
Please donate what you can safely and reasonably afford but also repost on every vehicle you can imagine. Facebook, twitter, etc. Send group emails! Our goal is 25K, but any small donation will help.
If everyone Rebecca has ever helped with the sweat of her brow, the donation of her time or just made you laugh please activate for her now. The world will be a better place with our Becca back in form!
