Rebecca “Becca" Hale was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer in February 2017. She has been and continues to be one “helluva" fighter; her faith strong that she will be a cancer survivor! Becca completed several rounds of chemotherapy and both external and internal radiation in 2017, earning a break in treatment by fall 2017. New pain and severe lower extremity swelling were the symptoms that the PET scan confirmed: the cancer was spreading again. She completed more radiation and lymphadema physical therapy, which reduced her swelling and stopped the pain. Life seemed normal again! Now, you have to understand that Becca is such the fighter that she continued to work full time through all this…the doctors' appointments, chemo, radiation, bad days, all of it! She told me several times that it gave her purpose and a reason to get up and go even on the bad days.

A follow-up scan in early 2018 brought the news we dreaded to hear: the cancer was still there and regrowing again. It has spread to lymph nodes higher in the pelvis so treatment would be more aggressive this time: 9 rounds of 3 different chemotherapies every 28 days! Becca had her first surgery ever in spring 2018 to have a port placed in her chest so she could receive the chemo without destroying her veins. She did great and received chemo like a champ! She had some pretty bad side effects but didn’t let it damper her spirit or drive.

August 2018 brought new complications we always knew were possibilities but didn’t expect to see. Sudden onset of severe pain, infection after infection, the formation of fistulas to both the intestine and shortly after, the bladder and life has been hard for her, physically and mentally. She was hospitalized but able to return to work after a couple weeks: weaker physically but mentally strong!
Becca came home in early November 2018 not seeming like herself and worsened over the next few days. An ER trip, hospital admission, and more medical tests/scans than you'd ever want to imagine revealed she had a previously undetected infection in her bladder that had spread to her kidneys then her blood. Her kidneys were shutting down and she lost the ability to move her legs and feet. While in the hospital, she developed a secondary intestinal infection because of her weak immune system and the antibiotics. Thankfully the treatments at the hospital worked and she was able to be released home after a couple weeks. She would require daily IV antibiotics and physical therapy at home but was finally stable enough to leave!
So here she is a month later using that same determination to relearn to walk, ready to restart her cancer treatments (3 more rounds to go!) when her body is strong enough, ready to get back to “normal life", and with the desire to return to work when she is able and cleared by her doctors (hopefully in January ). If you know Becca at all, she is the first to lend a hand, to help anyone in need, to listen when someone needs an ear, and has literally given the shirt off her back to another. I know I’m biased because she's my person but know that she is fantastic and kind and hardworking and right now, she needs your help. All donations would go to her medical debt and to help with current bills due while she is out of work. I promise y'all that it will be paid forward when able to help another in need.

Thank you for taking the time to read about Becca's story and for your consideration and donation. It is appreciated more than you can ever imagine!
