Rearview Mirror - Short film by Diya Mark

"A young woman hitches a ride down the coast with a smalltime drug dealer, running away from her past and towards something totally new."

"Rearview Mirror" is a film I have been thinking about for years now. I drew a lot from my experiences growing up as a young brown person in Milwaukee, and my experiences with love, loss, and trauma. I want this film to be grounded in that reality. In the last couple of years I created my short films "Bite Me," a horror film, and "The Waiting Room" which is a science fiction film about what happens after death. I've spent a lot of time working in these genres and for my next work I want to explore how intense and surreal real life can be. I will be utilizing an experimental narrative to tell the story. I will bring in a diverse cast and crew full of local creatives.

If I was to compare "Rearview Mirror" to a few films, I would say I was influenced by the films American Honey (2016), Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001), and The Florida Project (2017).

The budget I have come up with is as frugal as I can be without sacrificing quality. I am using the money from this kickstarter to feed my cast and crew, hire talent, rent equipment, and pay for wardrobe and art department.

I am an award-winning filmmaker who will do my own cinematography in addition to Directing and writing this film. "Rearview Mirror" will showcase the talent of often underrepresented communities and bring my vision to life in the process.
