On December 13, 2017, Andres Patiño participated in an event organized by the Belgian, Canadian and Colombian missions to the United Nations in New York, commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Ottawa Treaty to prohibit the use of anti-personal mines. He gave a moving testimony of how stepping on a landmine dramatically changed his life.
Andres was just 20 years old and serving in the Colombian military -- protecting his fellow Colombians against terrorist actions by rebel movements -- when he lost his right leg because of a landmine. He was discharged from the military and went through a very difficult time. The rehabilitation process was long and difficult, but the hardest part was the prospect of living the rest of his life with only one leg. He found a way out by concentrating on sports, in particular 100m and 200m running. Eventually, he became a Colombian Paralympics champion and is now only a few hundreds of a second short of qualifying for the Tokyo Paralympics.
I asked Andres whether the type of prosthetic leg makes a difference in these races. He explained me it did, and that his dream was to get an "Össur Cheetah Xtreme" professional sprinting foot , in order to qualify (and hopefully make it to the podium) for the Tokyo Paralympics. However, he doesn't have the US$ 4,000 to pay for this prosthetic leg.
I promised him I would help him raise the money and realize his dream. If we all make a small contribution, Andres' dream is within reach. And hopefully we can all be proud if he makes it to the podium in Tokyo.

El 13 de diciembre de 2017, Andrés Patiño participó en un evento organizado por las misiones antes las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York de Bélgica, Canadá y Colombia, en conmemoración del vigésimo aniversario del Tratado de Ottawa para prohibir el uso de minas antipersonales. Andrés dio un conmovedor testimonio de cómo pisar una mina antipersonal cambió drásticamente su vida.
Andrés tenía solo 20 años y estaba sirviendo el ejército colombiano -- protegiendo a sus compatriotas colombianos de las acciones terroristas de los movimientos rebeldes -- cuando perdió su pierna derecha debido a una mina terrestre. Se retiró del ejército y pasó por un momento muy difícil. El proceso de rehabilitación fue largo y duro, pero la parte más difícil fue la perspectiva de vivir el resto de su vida con una sola pierna. Encontró en el atletismo una nueva vida, y ahora es campeón paralímpico nacional de Colombia en los 100 y 200 metros. Tiene solo unos pocos cientos de segundos de clasificarse para los Juegos Paralímpicos de Tokio.
Le pregunté a Andrés si el tipo de pierna protésica hace una diferencia en los estas carreras. Me explicó que sí, y que su sueño era conseguir un pie de carrera profesional "Össur Cheetah Xtreme" y después clasificarse (y con suerte llegar al podio) para los Juegos Paralímpicos de Tokio. Sin embargo, Andrés no tiene los US $ 4,000 para pagar esta pierna protésica.
Le prometí que lo ayudaría a recaudar el dinero y realizar su sueño. Si todos hacemos una pequeña contribución, el sueño de Andrés puedo realizarse. Y todos podamos estar orgullosos si logra llegar al podio en Tokio.
