Imagine a Shadow (Bayangkan Bayang) has officially been selected for Camden People Theatre’s SPRINT Festival, and is now being developed into a full one-hour theatrical production for Spring 2026.
I am the creator and lead artist behind Imagine a Shadow, a theatre project rooted in lived experiences of migration, displacement, and statelessness. I am raising funds directly for the development and production of this work, which I am producing in collaboration with artists and contributors who have firsthand experience of migration and marginalisation.
This project began as a 20-minute work-in-progress, supported by early donors via GoFundMe. Thanks to that support, we successfully shared the piece with a live audience and the response was powerful. People connected deeply with the story, and as a result, the work has now been invited to grow into a full-length feature for a respected London theatre festival.
Why We’re Raising Funds Now:
We now have just 8 weeks to expand Imagine a Shadow into a fully realised, one-hour production. That kind of growth requires real resources especially if we want to tell these stories with honesty, care, and artistic integrity.
The funds raised will go directly to the project, covering:
- Research and development
- Rehearsal space hire
- Writing and dramaturgy
- Illustration and animation for stage projections
- Sound design and composition
- Equipment and software subscriptions
- Costumes and props
Every contribution supports the artists and collaborators bringing this work to life.
Why This Story Matters
“Bayangkan Bayang” translates to “Imagine a Shadow.”
And that’s exactly what this piece asks you to do.
Imagine not being able to access healthcare.
Imagine being denied education.
Imagine being unable to obtain a passport or identity card from the country you were born in.
Imagine being denied housing or even legal recognition of your existence.
You exist, but on record, you don’t.
This is the reality for over 10 million stateless people worldwide.
Under international law, a stateless person is someone “not considered as a national by any state under the operation of its law.” Many are born into this condition through no fault of their own. In places like Borneo, Malaysia, which has the third-largest reported stateless population in Southeast Asia, entire generations grow up invisible locked out of basic rights and opportunities.
Imagine a Shadow confronts this reality head-on. It asks difficult questions about how governments fail people, how borders define worth, and why the most vulnerable are often punished for circumstances they did not choose.
Where This Leads
After its showing at Camden People Theatre, our goal is to develop Imagine a Shadow into a touring production, working with a larger ensemble of artists with lived experience of migration and displacement. These stories are not niche they are universal, urgent and deeply relevant to the world we live in today.
How Your Support Helps
All funds raised will be used exclusively for the development and production of Imagine a Shadow. Your donation goes directly toward making this work possible and ensuring these stories are seen, heard, and remembered.
Any amount large or small makes a real difference.
If you believe in the power of theatre to challenge injustice, amplify silenced voices, and spark meaningful conversation, we would be deeply grateful for your support.
Thank you for believing in this project and in the people whose stories it carries.
