Reading Stars of Gaza

Hello, I'm Peter Fruhmann and I want to raise money for a project called “Reading Stars of Gaza,” a 2015 initiative by Khaled Al Ostath (then an English Literature student) and fellow students, who wanted to give (orphaned) children in Gaza a chance to learn to read, write and speak English.
"Reading Stars of Gaza" had opened up a world of knowledge and imagination for the children. Through engaging stories and colorful books, children have learned about diverse cultures, societies, and kids around the world.
These books have not only expanded their vocabulary but also broadened their understanding of different ways of life and the beauty of nature. The stories have provided a much-needed escape from the harsh realities of their daily lives, allowing them to explore new ideas and perspectives. This initiative has also fostered a love for reading, helping children develop critical thinking skills and a deeper appreciation for the world around them.

I was able to contribute to the initiative at the time and want to do so again now, as the situation in Gaza is dire.
Khaled now teaches English elsewhere, but wants to be able to further help (orphan) children in affected Gaza with schooling.
The money I want to raise will find its destination in Gaza through Khaled.
This is his story wherein he explains everything (including the destination of the money):
"Every child deserves the right to a proper education, yet in war-torn regions like Gaza, this fundamental right is being stripped away.
We are committed to making a difference for these children, ensuring they have the opportunities they deserve.
The war in Gaza has turned schools into battlegrounds. Imagine classrooms once filled with laughter and learning, now reduced to rubble. The relentless bombings have not only claimed lives but also shattered the dreams of countless students and teachers. With schools destroyed and the academic year in disarray, the future of Gaza’s youth hangs in the balance.
The trauma of war has left children too scared to attend school, robbing them of their right to education. This dire situation has created a generation of young minds yearning for knowledge but trapped in a cycle of conflict and despair.
The need for a safe and stable learning environment has never been more urgent.
Back in 2015, when I first started the program, my family in Gaza stood by me. They made sure I had everything I needed and went above and beyond, making connections with the orphanage to accommodate me and my project.
Now, I am far away from my family, in my own exile, and they are in Gaza, sheltering in a tent with nothing but a little bit of hope.

This project will give them a purpose for living, support them financially even if just a bit, and make Gaza great again.
The ongoing conflict and instability in Gaza have severely impacted the education and well-being of children. The Reading Stars of Gaza program, which previously provided essential literacy support to orphans, is more crucial than ever. This proposal outlines a plan to reinitiate and expand the program to reach more displaced children and broaden the scope of subjects taught, ensuring a comprehensive and enjoyable educational experience.

Objectives
1. Reinitiate the Program: Restart the Reading Stars of Gaza program to provide consistent educational support.
2. Expand Reach: Increase the number of children served, focusing on displaced kids and those most affected by the war.
3. Broaden Curriculum: Include subjects beyond English, such as mathematics, science, and social studies, to provide a well-rounded education.
4. Emotional and Psychological Support: Incorporate activities that support the emotional and psychological well-being of the children.

Justification
1. Educational Disruption: With schools becoming shelters and most of them destroyed due to bombings and instability, children lack access to formal education. This program will fill that gap.
2. Holistic Development: Teaching a variety of subjects (i.e., English, Math, Science, PE) will ensure children receive a comprehensive education, preparing them for future opportunities. Gaza needs this now more than ever.
3. Emotional Resilience: Educational activities can provide a sense of normalcy and stability, helping children cope with the trauma of war.
4. Community Support: Engaging the community in educational initiatives fosters a supportive environment for children’s growth and development.

Implementation Plan
1. Recruitment and Training:
To ensure the success of the reinitiated and expanded Reading Stars of Gaza program, I will be reaching out to my original team—at least those who are still in Gaza and alive—to rejoin the program. Their dedication and experience are invaluable to our mission.
In addition, I come from a family of educators and professionals who are eager to contribute:
My father, a social studies teacher, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in engaging young minds.
My brother, a biomedical engineer, can offer insights into science and technology, enriching our curriculum.
My sister, who turned 18 last year, is a passionate story lover and bookworm. She is eager to read stories to the kids, fostering a love for reading and learning.

2. Curriculum Development: Develop a curriculum that includes English, mathematics, science, and social studies, tailored to the needs of the children. Books are scarce now with schools and libraries all destroyed.

3. Resource Allocation: Secure funding and resources, including books, educational materials, and safe learning spaces in tents.

4. Outreach and Enrollment:
Currently, where my family is displaced, there are at least 50-90 children ranging from primary to high school age who spend their days without any structured activities or educational opportunities. These children are in dire need of a chance to learn and be educated.
Providing them with this opportunity is not only essential for their personal development but also crucial for the future of Gaza. By engaging these children in our program, we can help them build a brighter future and contribute positively to their community.

5. Monitoring and Evaluation: Implement a system to monitor progress and evaluate the impact of the program, adjusting as needed.

Expected Outcomes
1. Improved Literacy and Education: Children will improve their literacy and gain knowledge in various subjects, initiating their overall education.
2. Enhanced Emotional Well-being: Regular educational activities will provide emotional stability and support.
3. Community Engagement: Increased community involvement in educational initiatives will create a supportive environment for children.
4. Future Opportunities: A well-rounded education will open up future educational and employment opportunities for the children.
