Reading Revolution in Panorama City!

There is a reading revolution happening at the middle school where I work! We are working together as an entire school site to grow student reading.

Many of the families I serve do not have regular access to quality, exciting, age appropriate reading material at home. Families cannot afford to pay late fees at the school or city library and so discourage students from checking out books. I have been working for the last several years to get a relevant, exciting, culturally responsive classroom libraries in the classrooms of every English teacher at my school. My district has also worked with LA Public Library to get every student a city library card and unlimited access to online books. WE'VE GOT THE BOOKS! Now it's time to work on the culture of reading at my school site.

We are launching an incentive-based reading program rewarding students for reading outside of school. Students are encouraged to read any book they like. Reading books and showing their comprehension earns students points which earns them prizes.

I am personally raising funds to purchase rewards for the AMAZING STUDENT READERS at my school. Many students need awesome incentives to encourage them to develop reading habits that will help them grow as readers throughout their lives. When students become strong readers, they can take control of their own education and their futures! The whole world opens up to them!
