Hi there! We are Angie & Dewana, owners of LIT Java Coffee & Books! We are so excited to open the doors of our bookshop/coffee cafe to the public in early 2024! We have been working tirelessly to get the business ready for the public. After being told 'no' to business loans from several financial institutions (reason being that we have not been operational for over 2 years), we stepped out on faith and decided to self-fund. We both invested a substantial amount of money into the business because we truly believe in our mission and what we have to offer.
We operate LIT Java Coffee & Books according to our 5Cs:
1) Curated Literary Experiences
3) Cultural Diversity
5) Conversations over LIT cups of Coffee!
We look forward to bringing the community together through curated literary experiences such as:
- book clubs
- author events
- reading and writing contest
- read-ins & write-ins
- wellness events
- a plethora of children-focused events.
We are determined to pouring back into our community that has supported and encouraged us along this journey.
Our commitment to cultural diversity is rooted in our experiences as children. Unfortunately, we rarely saw ourselves reflected in the pages of books we read as children. We do not want any child to walk into our store and have the same experience. Therefore, we aim for everyone especially children, to see themselves reflected in the stories on the shelves, no matter what cultural background they come from. We want them to see that they can be heroes and heroines in their own stories. Our desire is that not only will they deepen their appreciation for their own cultural background, but that they will also learn about other cultures. We believe that learning about other cultures and traditions is the primary way to eradicate ignorance, thus promoting cultural awareness and understanding. We look forward to celebrating the diversity that is represented in Pearland, which has been hailed as one of the most diverse cities in America.
As part of giving back to our community, we aim to implement our Readers2Leaders program. Through this program, we aim to provide tutoring services for reading and writing for children grades K-8, provide author-led enrichment activities, and to establish a scholarship program for high school students.
We have high hopes for LIT Java Coffee & Books and we know that we can achieve any goal we set. If you know either of us personally, you know that we both are hardworking, goal-oriented, and ambitious. As a former educator and US Army Veteran, we both have a deep commitment to serve our community. We believe that when the community is strong the future is bright. We want to do all that we can to help ensure a promising future for the upcoming generations.
We could really use your help!
Donations will be used to establish our Readers2Leaders program by hiring tutors and staff, and purchasing materials. They will also go towards general operating expenses and initial start-up costs. Every dollar donated will be a dollar put towards building a stronger community and a brighter future for all.
We'd love for LIT Java Coffee & Books to be a place where like and unlike-minded people can come, connect and learn about each other. We look forward to providing the space and coffee for collaborations to be made and conversations to be had.
