Mental health issues are so often misunderstood, overlooked, ignored, or hidden by families due to perceived negative social stigma and judgment. Everything may look great on the outside, but inside behind the scene tells a different story.
With that said, the last 8 years have been a wild ride in the Beaman family. As most of you are aware, we adopted Joe when he was 7 and we've had ups and downs in our relationships with each other. Joe has Reactive Attachment Disorder (otherwise known as Borderline Personality Disorder in adults) which makes it difficult for Joe to trust parental/family attachments and engrains a deep-seated need for control which includes lying, stealing, manipulating, constantly testing boundaries, vengeful and dangerous behaviors, etc. We have had family therapy for 4 years, have participated in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), horse therapy, occupational therapy, Neurofeedback, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Joe has also received inpatient short term hospitalization 5 times. On the outside, everything may seem fine, but on the inside there is turmoil.
Without question, we are committed to Joe, we love him dearly, and we want us to all be a family, but we require additional support that means Joe will not be living with us for the next 12 months.
Joe is attending a private therapeutic boarding school called Master's Ranch and Christian Academy in Missouri through August of 2020 (http://mastersranch.org/). The goal is to reunite as a family after his completion of their 12-month program. We will travel to Missouri every 3 months to visit Joe and work on our relationship. Rob, Betty, and Christian will also participate in private Christian family counseling in Colorado during the 12 months.
Needless to say, this is an expensive commitment. Medical Insurance will not provide financial assistance. We are currently trying to refinance our home to use the equity to pay for the majority of the costs and Betty will seek out a full-time job during the summer of 2020 to help offset costs. Despite our best efforts, we will definitely fall short financially.
*Admission Fees: $6,700
*Initial Transportation Fees: $3,800
*Monthly Tuition: $3,800 x 12 = $45,600
*Mandatory Incidental Funds: $900
*Estimated 3-month visit expenses (airfare, hotel, rental car, etc.): ~$800/$1000 x 4 = $3,200-$4,000
*Out-of-pocket orthodontist care: $850
*Out-of-pocket Colorado family counseling: $230/month x 11 months =$2,530
Total estimated expenses: $64,380
We need the support of our friends and family in ANY of the following ways:
1.Most importantly, please PRAY for our family!
- Pray, not only for Joe's eternal salvation but for discovering his true identity and self-esteem in Christ~ to know the unconditional love and forgiveness of our Savior. For Joe to love himself, to trust himself, to grow in his faith, and embrace the young man that God created. God doesn't make mistakes!
- Pray for healing for Joe: from his past and current traumas.
- Pray for the emotional healing of our entire family. We all have significant PTSD from maladaptive coping mechanisms and from how we've all been treated/treating each other over the past several years. Pray for our Colorado family counseling. Pray that we can each forgive one another, forgive ourselves, and move forward in a healthy way: reset our family baseline.
- Pray for Christian's healing specifically~ his freshman high school year is off and running; marching band, lacrosse, working as a lifeguard part-time, driving lessons for his permit, etc. The last 8 years have not been easy for him; may God lead, guide, protect, and provide healing.
- Pray for our reunification: that our family will be blessed with healthy relationships grounded in trust, respect, honesty, forgiveness, and integrity.
- Pray for God to multiply our resources: loaves and fish! May what little we have, be sufficient for the need! Pray of our house to appraise HIGH.
2. Send letters and cards to Joe through us.
He needs to feel the love and support of family and friends during this time. Please love on him! All communication needs to go through us; know that Master's Ranch may screen letters/cards. All letters will eventually be received by Joe, but they monitor the timing based on content; discerning what he may be ready or prepared to receive. Please send letters and cards to Joe, attention Rob and Betty Beaman, 13224 W. Saratoga Dr., Morrison, CO 80465. Thanksgiving cards, Christmas cards, birthday cards (February 19th), etc would be AWESOME! Please do not send presents.
**Please do not state the length of Joe's program in any communication (don't state when you will next see him or encourage him to hang in there for X more months, etc.).
3. Prayerfully consider making a financial donation to add to the loaves and fish.
All funds provided will:
- Supplement monthly tuition costs for 12 months (minimum)
- Supplement airfare, hotel, rental car expenses during our family's 4 Missouri visits.
- Supplement our out-of-pocket costs for Colorado family counseling.
- Any and all proceeds over the amount needed to cover our costs will be donated to the Master's Ranch and Christian Academy in Joe's name (non-profit). -----We will immediately stop the Go Fund Me account when/if the goal is met.
Although our human tendency is to stay silent and be self-sufficient, we reach out in faith~ we need to be transparent with our friends and family and share our needs (something we struggle with). Thank you in advance for your prayers, letters/cards, and financial support.
*We cherish your support and are OK if you feel led to share (EMAIL) this information in confidence with your church community, trusted friends and family. Please do not post on social media.
We will post updates on this website throughout the next 12 months.
