Were all in shock, so forgive me if this isnt as eloquent as it should be. Where to begin? On Easter Sunday my beautiful, vibrant cousin Celynn stopped breathing. She had spent the day with family, eating, drinking, swimming and doing what thousands do on a holiday spent with family. That night she sent her husband, Oscar, on an errand and got into bed. When Oscar returned he found her unconscious and unresponsive. CPR was started, paramedics were called and she was rushed to the hospital.
We knew it was bad. Her brain had gone too long without oxygen and she had slipped into a coma. On Wednesday, April 8th the doctors said there was nothing left to do and the choice was made to start the organ donation process. It gives us comfort knowing she will live on through this miracle and will be the hero of someone else's story, even though she is be gone from ours.
I am am here today asking for your help. This isnt easy for anyone and I would not be asking but for her three, beautiful children, Maddie is 11, Ruben is 7 and little Coco is 5. Obviously no one is prepared for this. Celynn was a hardworking, ambitious woman, started her own real estate company. Oscar is hard working, proud and a great father. And never imagined needing to ask for help. I know the amount asked is a lot. I know it. But the money will go to pay for her funeral and every addtional dollar will go directly to her husband and her kids. We are grateful to each of you who took the time to read this. Grateful for every penny given and to those who cannot donate, please consider becoming an organ donor. It would be a fitting legacy for Celynn, who would do anything for any of us.
Celynn Marie Mercado, December 17th 1980-April 2015.
Updated: On Friday, April 10th 32 separate families got a life-saving phone call. 32, amazing. what a gift my cousin left, for all of us. We also learned that over 50 people got tissue donations and that her heart and lungs went to people right here in San Diego. If we can't have her at least we know her grace will mean so much to countless others.
The family would like to thank all of you who have donated. We are overwhelmed by this outpouring. Oscar is beyond grateful. And we are comforted knowing he and their children will be provided for in the difficult weeks to come.
