Interfaith Root Causes Delegation

I was invited to join an interfaith delegation from the United States to Honduras and Guatemala this summer, representing the American Muslim community through the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California.
The purpose of the delegation is to explore the Root Cause of Migration (if you remember last summer from this region 70,000 unaccompanied children came to the United States). We will be meeting with faith and community groups in the countries where these children came from, and connect with organizations addressing migration as well as meet with families and deported children to better understand the factors behind this an unprecedented migration.
In the media there are reports that this migration is due to violence, economic and political factors, as well as family reunification. Violence plays a huge role, in fact, so much so that the delegation costs will go to cover the expense of hiring security for our protection as we move about in both Honduras and Guatemala. But not one of these factors seem to fully explain the rational behind the migration of children as young as 8 years of age, across thousands of miles, alone.
The goal of this work is to help shape the advocacy and policy in the US from so that the focus is not simply on enforcement.
