The Swinney Foundation—Support for Students & Families

All their lives, my mother, Beatrice L. Swinney and father, Sherman (Pop)  Swinney, set a superb example for everyone around them. They worked their entire adult lives at Mead School and Office Products in Atlanta, Georgia.  They taught me the value of hard work, encouraged me to take pride in myself, and to do the best at everything I tried.  Both were excellent role models.  They guided me toward the military and getting a good education.  They taught me to care about others.  I credit all my successes and achievements to the lessons they taught me. I knew I needed to do something in their honor.  Through the Swinney Foundation, I have committed myself to honoring my parents by providing scholarships to technical college and university students.  I also offer resources to single-parent families.  To understand my parents, is also understanding me.  I’d like to share some of my background with you.

I am an author, college instructor, and military veteran.  Although I confronted many obstacles such as being a cancer survivor and a single-parent, I obtained my Ph.D.  My journey has been both daunting and rewarding.  My background is what shapes my passion for helping college students and single parents.

Did you know the greatest contributing factor for college graduation is not grades, it is money?  Students struggle to pay ever-increasing tuition and to buy expensive textbooks. Academic success should not be determined by socio-economic background.  Hard working, exceptional students shouldn’t have to drop out because they lack the family resources to pay for school.  Adding to this societal issue is the fact that nearly 50% of children today will spend some portion of their lives in a single-parent household.  Consider the high cost of living, it takes two incomes to merely make ends meet.  Imagine how much harder it is for single parents.  There is a need for assistance for the future generation.

I am turning to you, friends, for help raising the funds needed for The Swinney Foundation.  Every dollar counts!  All donations are tax deductible.  As I continue to do my part in helping more kids attend college and graduate, I am calling on you for support.  Let’s help the future generations.  I thank you for your time and consideration.

Kindest Regards,

Dr. Sharmon L. Swinney Monagan
