Feb 4th my dad was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma aka tongue and throat cancer. He had to have a trachea put in place due to one of the masses blocking his airway. When they put the trachea in they tried to remove the mass but it was too big and they couldn't do much to it. He has 3 spots, one at the base of his tongue, two on the left side where his lymph node is and a unknown mass on his right lymph node. He has a port put in for his chemo which he does every Monday for seven weeks and that alone is seven hours a day. He is also doing radiation everyday for seven weeks as well. Today is the third chemo day and his eleventh day of radiation. We were just told that he now has thrush and can barely swallow. Due to the radiation it is making the mass in the back of his throat swell up and feel extremely bruised and hurts him so bad just to move his head around much less eat or drink. They are wanting to put a feeding tube in if this new medication doesn't help. In saying all of this my mother and father have both been out on FMLA, my mom has ran out of sick and vacation time due to my dad having multiple dr apts. My dad was informed today that he will need to go on short term disability which is 60% of his pay. Financially they are barely making it and have already had bills rolling in.
