Teaching English in Thailand

Hello everyone! My name is Mika Cowley, and I've grown up for the last 13 years of my life in Mozambique and Malawi. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed living here, and have met so many wonderful people.

However, I’ve always been different from my friends in Africa — they don’t look like me. They don’t speak the same language as me. They know nothing of life in the Western world. But that’s the most interesting part about having friends from different cultures; you have the opportunity to learn about their culture, learn their language, and learn about their lives.

There are so many people in the world, and I think the diversity of all the different cultures is extraordinary. I find it truly fascinating, and have made a great effort in learning about different cultures and learning different languages.

I think it’s a true passion of mine being with foreigners, and I think it’s something I would like to dedicate my life to. What can I do to help them, though?

There are lots of different options, but one thing that especially interests me is teaching English. Not only will I get to work in the area I love, but I would be able to help people learn English! Speaking English is an ability greatly valued in many countries, and if I can help people further themselves in getting work, then I am happy to do so!

As many of you probably know, my family is moving back to the States at the beginning of 2016. I finished high school several months ago, and instead of starting college last August, I decided to take a gap year. I would really like to pursue TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) studies in University, but thought it would be a good idea to find a place where I can practice it first and see if it’s the right fit for me. (I certainly hope it is; I’m already excited about finishing college and living overseas or in the US working with foreigners and refugees.)

I found the perfect opportunity in Chiang Mai, Thailand that allows me to teach English to college-age Thai students, most of whom are Buddhists. It’s run by a Christian organization called The Centre, and lets me volunteer as a teacher for several months.

I’d love to be able to go and work there for three months — leave for Thailand late January and fly to the US in April.

But I can’t do this alone. Even though I’ll be traveling by myself, I really do need a team to support me in prayer and with finances. I’m trying to raise $5000, and this should cover the costs of airfare, living in Thailand and a little extra for traveling around.

I’ve already raised a little bit of money from a job I have in Lichinga, our provincial capital in Mozambique, working as a preschool teacher to kids from Africa, Europe, North & South America and India. It’s difficult to make a lot of money here, so I’m depending on my supporters to make this trip happen.
