Help Lexie Go to Thailand

Donation protected
Hello everyone! My name is Lexie Ornelas and I am a second year at UCLA. From the moment I first stepped foot on this campus, I have been on a non-stop personal roller coaster. I am constantly learning new things about myself and questioning what I want to do after my undergraduate education. Ever since I was 12, I was set on being a high school teacher, but recently I have began to consider pursuing a career in the Public Health field.

Now what is Public Health exactly you might ask? Well it is an increasingly popular field that is comprised of a variety of subdivisions, with the overall goal of protecting and improving health conditions across different scales.

I have recently been accepted to a pilot Border Public Health study abroad program at Thammasat University's Rangsit campus in Thailand. The primary focus of the courses I will be taking are to explore populations, mobility and health issues of the Thai-Myanmar border. The program is seven weeks, and offers a unique experience of doing both fieldwork and lab-based components, with scheduled guest speakers throughout program.

I am very excited and grateful for this opportunity; however, it is quite expensive. I am currently working maximum hours at work and have been applying to scholarships. If you know me, you might know that this is very out of character to fundraise in such a way, but I want to take this time to say that anything you could donate would be extremely helpful. Even if money is not a possibilty, a small prayer for safety and well wishes would be just as equally appreciated as this will be the first time I travel out of the country.

Education has always been a passion of mine and the thought of being able to learn from international scholars is a dream. Not only will I be intellectually challenging myself, but I will be introducing myself to new cultures and customs which will allow me to grow more as a person. The short term goal I hope to walk away with, is a better idea of which specific aspect of Public Health I would like to ultimately pursue and use this experience as a transition from making my hopes a  reality.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
