Greetings all,
My name is Ray Walker and I am running the Berlin Marathon this September made possible with the support of my run crew, Team WEPA NYC. My first-ever marathon. I was selected for this opportunity after submitting a response to our team captains outlining why I wanted to run the Berlin Marathon. Please take a few moments to read my response below:
"I began my running journey almost a year ago, which was around the time I moved to New York City. I hardly knew anyone. What I did know was that I’ve always had a knack for running. But, it was when I joined WEPA that my heart started to smile when I ran. My legs started turning into springs that could leap over the barriers and blockades of life. The art of “running in community” changed my entire outlook on the sport and since then, a part of me feels incomplete without running in my life.
Even though I have not run a marathon (yet), I can still appreciate everything about it. I see marathons as a reflection of life. Can you overcome the voices of pain? Can you outlast the fatigue? These are questions that push me whether I am running or going through tough moments. Tackling the markers of life one mile at a time. Sometimes we have to encourage ourselves and other times we have crowds cheering us on. Now, imagine how important those questions are during a marathon journey.
So why the Berlin Marathon? At my core, I’ll always be a kid from Columbus, Ohio. A kid who has never been outside of the country. Someone who has never gotten to broaden my horizons through international travel and culture. This opportunity would allow me to take something I’ve fallen in love with and bring it with me as I embark on a major life event and expand my worldview. And on top of that, to do so in such a historical place like Berlin would be electrifying. This is a one-in-a-lifetime chance to soak up the rich culture and landmarks of Berlin all while running on a World Major stage. It gives me goosebumps just writing that! It’s an adventure that would have me beaming with joy and evolving as a person.
At the end of the day, I love a challenge and have embraced them my whole life. And Berlin is my next challenge. I’m ready for it."
Please consider supporting me to help me fulfill this dream. All funds will go toward my travel, lodging, and meals. Thank you in advance!
With love,
Ray
