On March 28th, 2021, Raymond Borden had an accident causing a Maisonneuve fracture, involving both the fibula, tibula, and torn ligaments. Ray underwent surgery on April 6th to heal the ankle by resetting the bones and securing the joint with the placement of two distal 3.5 mm tri-cortical screws. The ligaments were expected to regenerate and the screws replaced after a year. A knee high cast was used to limit motion of the ankle and it was removed after 2 weeks to remove the sutures. A second splint was then put on for another six weeks. No weight bearing was allowed which prevented him from driving and working in the restaurant for three months. Eventually he was given a walking boot (air cast) and was allowed to start bearing weight on the ankle. He returned to work in the middle of June.
Sometime at the beginning of August, he noticed an increasing discomfort and abnormal swelling in the ankle. He was x-rayed and it was determined that the screws that were intended to hold the ankle together were failing and that he was going to need a second, more intense surgery requiring a bone graft, fusing of the ankle, a plate and additional screws. A minimum down time of 6 - 8 weeks without bearing any weight on the ankle is expected, which means no driving and no working at the restaurant.
Raymond has made his living and supported his family for 33 years in the restaurant business, catering to countless guests and putting in up to 80 hours a week at times. Unfortunately, under the current circumstances he is unable to work and cover his monthly financial obligations. Having been out of work for close to three months earlier this year due to this unfortunate accident, this time around will be especially challenging.
Raymond has touched the hearts of many with his unconditional hospitality and warmth in his professional life in the restaurant business and in his personal life. We would like to provide Ray with additional financial support as he enters his second round of surgery. Donations of all sizes are more than greatly appreciated. #RaymondsRaceToRecovery
