Raymond Imlah's Spinal Surgery

Donation protected
Ray recalls the first time he “stressed”  his back.. In 1987 or 1988 our dad was felling a tree and it  was falling  back onto him. Ray used all his strength to hold the tree so dad could get clear.

He herniated a disc.  In 1989 he went for his first surgery where they cut out most of this disc, but there was still a protrusion causing him to always have a curvature in his spine.  Over the years he has been in and out of hospital, on total bed rest for months on end, and endless therapies to alleviate the pain.  Nothing has helped.  Surgeons here told him outright, there is no one thing they can do to alleviate his pain.”

A friend recommended he check out Germany, where their advancements in back/spinal surgery have had amazing  outcomes.  Ray applied and was accepted by the ONZ Team, Dr’s. Dierstedt & Ilerhaus, along with Matt Petersen.  Their prognosis is a greater than 90% recovery with mobility in 6 directions. This is far far beyond anything we could have dreamt of ever happening.

The surgical plan is a total discectomy by anterior surgical approach and disc replacement, which includes State of the Art implant Technology.

It will include a 7 day hospital stay, vascular preparation, fluoroscopic guidance (for accurate placement of the implant), post-operative physiotherapy during his hospitalization days, and finally, 7 days at Medicos Aufschalke Rehab Center for intensive and individual therapy.

Ray had no real hope of hearing from Germany, so when the call came,  getting the funding together became the major challenge. For Ray, flights to Germany have to be in First Class so he can lay down the majority of the way there.  These flights are not cheap. And with COVID-19, they have become even more expensive.   Paying for the surgeons, the hospital, the physiotherapy, and the transportation all add up to $70,000 Canadian dollars.

Ray has only been working part-time for the past few years. His wife Cathy is retired and has taken on a second job just to replace his lost income.  This cost, has and will put a strain on their current and future economic situation.   We are a proud family and don’t usually ask for help, but I am asking now, on behalf of my brother, for anyone who can to donate what you can as soon as you can.

We thank you from the bottoms of our hearts.
