RAYMOND G. WITZIG MEMORIAL FUND/WALL OF HONOR
In the fall of 1968, a memorial scoreboard was erected at the Gridley High School football field. The name on that memorial was Raymond G. Witzig, my uncle. He was 6 years older than me and was more of a brother than an uncle. In February of that year he was sent to Vietnam and served with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, 4/12 Delta Company. On May 6 1968, he was mortally wounded in a firefight, going to the aid of a fallen comrade while alerting his company to an ambush, allowing them to move to cover. He received many posthumous commendations from the U.S. Army.
That memorial stood there for 53 years, reminding those who saw it what the price of freedom really is. When the new middle school was built that memorial scoreboard had to come down. It was important to me that the legacy of that memorial live on for my uncle’s sake and the sake of the community.
I asked the school to consider a new memorial in his name and they have graciously given consent and worked with me to create a design we can all be proud of. Attached is a rendering of that design.
It will feature Uncle Raymond’s picture and the details of his sacrifice. Also along side will be the names of fellow service members, both active and veterans, with their branch of service, who have graduated from EPG High School after the consolidation.
We would appreciate those graduates who have served or are serving in the military send their names, year of graduation and branch of service.
We also are looking for donations to help pay for this memorial. Anything will help! The memorial will cost approximately $3100.00. Any money donated over that amount will go to the school to fund future names to be added to the wall.
Thank you in advance.
