Ray Yam Medical Fund
Donation protected
On Friday, May 8, 2020, Ray Yam suffered a ruptured aneurysm and his wife, Annette, found him unconscious in their home. The ambulance came and rushed him to the hospital, while their 6 year old daughter, Aubrey, waited patiently in the other room. Ray has had multiple brain surgeries, been on a ventilator, and was in a coma for over a month. Only recently has Ray been able to respond to small commands.
Family presence and support has a major impact on recoveries for Ray’s condition, but due to COVID19 restrictions, Annette and Aubrey are not allowed to visit him at the hospital. Every other day they are given a timed 15 minute FaceTime call, where they try to engage with Ray. Aubrey has been crucial in Ray’s progress; however, these short calls are heartbreaking with Aubrey wondering why her father is always sleeping and not answering her back.
The doctors don’t know how long it will take for Ray to be fully alert and if he will even be able to walk or talk again. It will be a long road ahead for Ray’s recovery and the best medical insurance will not be able to cover the many medical expenses for his condition. Ray is the main financial provider in the family, as Annette only works part time. Meanwhile, insurance is trying to move Ray out of the hospital into a nursing home, which will have a negative impact both on his recovery and his safety given the current COVID19 situation. In addition to Annette fighting insurance for Ray’s care, she is working, caring for Aubrey, and managing the household on her own. With so much uncertainty, we are setting up this fund to help with living and medical expenses for Ray.
If you know Annette and Ray, you know they are the nicest and most generous people you will ever meet. They will always go above and beyond to make other people feel special with their generosity. Ray is a devoted father and husband with selfless love for his family. The week leading to his hospitalization, Ray was experiencing severe headaches, which we now know was caused by bleeding in his brain. Despite the excruciating pain, Ray powered through and continued working, went grocery shopping for the family, and had planned to teach Aubrey how to ride a bike on that very Friday.
Any contribution amount will add up and will relieve some of the financial hardship in their journey. If you are not able to contribute, we would appreciate you keeping the Yam family in your prayers. Ray has so much more to give to his family and we are here fighting alongside with them to get him back to his family.
***A Few People Have Reached Out With Some Common Questions So I'd Like to Provide Additional Information Here:
I am organizing this on behalf of Annette and Ray, because friends from different social circles have requested a way to help the family. I have been friends with Annette and Ray for over 16 years and they are like family to me; Annette and I also work together. All donations go directly to the Yam family.
Please note that when you donate, GoFundMe automatically adds a 15% tip to help with their business operations. This is optional and you can click on it to change the tip to any other amount you would like, including $0. Paying this tip (or not) does not affect the amount the family receives. A few people have mistaken this tip to cover fees so that the family will receive the full amount of the intended donation.
If you were not aware or change your mind about the tip, you may request a refund directly from GoFundMe.
