Raul de Lara is truly our family's hero. He's been the best dad and husband we could have asked for and the people who know him personally are lucky, they would all tell you that he has always been the kind of person who is there for everyone, he will extend a helping hand to anyone in need, take the shirt off is back without a second thought, and he is just the hardest worker. This GoFundMe has been set up by his kids and family.
In January 2019, my dad landed in the ER for the fist time without being able to breathe. There we learned that his lungs where filled with fluid, his heart had some fluid around it as well, and eventually we got to the root cause. Our dad has lived with diabetes for over 16 years now. While he was managing it as best as he could, kidney disease was almost inevitable.
Since his kidneys were still working (at 20%) the doctors drained all fluid and added some medications to his regimen, but a few short weeks later he landed back in the hospital, and then again with the same issues. By April his kidney function was down to 14%. At this time, the talk about dialysis started, but Raul was set on trying t stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible, at least to be able to see his 2 sons graduate. And so our family planned it. Raul, his oldest son was set to graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University with his Masters in Sculpture on May 11th, 2019. Our dad was cleared by his doctors to travel and whole family met in Virginia for it. Unfortunately, the day before the graduation, my dad woke up not being able to breath again so we rushed him to the hospital. His kidneys were almost shut down, and he ended up not only missing graduation, but having to stay in Virginia another 9 days in the hospital.
As soon as he was healthy enough to travel, my parents flew back to Texas, a day and a half later, he was back in the hospital. Sadly, he also missed Armando's graduation, his youngest son, from the University of Texas.
After trying their hardest not to resource to it, doctors finally decided that dialysis needed to start, and so he did on May 21st. He is currently still in the hospital awaiting a spot at the dialysis center nearest to the house and on his doctors to consider him well enough to be discharged. But this is just the beginning of him and my mom's new lifestyle.
As I mentioned, our dad is truly amazing, he has done so much for so many people and now he is just waiting to be able to go back to his old self, to work, and enjoy life as best as possible in this new chapter. As a family we have many things planned for the future and we are all in this together.
Due to all the hospital visits, our parents have not been able to work for months and have been living off of savings, which are quickly draining. His medical bills stacked up quickly and they still are coming, so we are here, asking for and appreciating any help and prayers. All funds raised will be used directly to take care of medical bills, future doctor's visits, dialysis, and medications.
From the bottom on our hearts, thank you for taking the time to donate or share this page, God bless!
