Rashon Thomas Medical and Funeral Costs

My 18-year-old boy, Rashon's smile and spirit lit every room he stepped foot into.

On November 16, 2019, I received the call that I never thought I would receive -- Rashon was admitted to the hospital after ingesting and overdosing on an opioid. My world stopped and shattered into a million pieces. Rashon was a son, a brother, an uncle, a nephew, a favorite cousin, and most importantly, a friend to all.

My son who was incredibly caring and loving would no longer be at the dinner table with his younger siblings to help them with homework. My son who loved basketball would never dribble another ball down the court. My son's smile that lit up a room, would no longer shine.

Like most 18-year-olds, Rashon loved spending time with friends and family,  playing basketball, and video games. Rashon loved playing Apex Legends and Fortnite with his friends. The past couple years, Rashon dedicated himself to working in construction--specializing in roofing and siding.  During his workday, he would also teach his Spanish speaking co-workers English. Rashon was known to keep peace and always bring joy and cheer to others. His uplifting spirit will be missed.

Even though I never expected this to happen to my son, it did. This is a far too common story for myself and others who have lost their loved ones to opioids. There are two goals for this campaign.

(1) Help cover the high health care and funeral arrangement costs.

The following is where your donation will help go towards:

- Medical Expenses: $20,000
- Funeral Costs: $20,000

(2) Increase opioid awareness so that fewer families have to experience the heartbreak and pain we are going through.

In 2017, the government declared that opioid-related overdoses and subsequent deaths had reached a state of emergency. One of the main drivers behind the drastic increase in opioid-related deaths is opioids that are laced with fentanyl-like Rashon fatally ingested. According to the federal government, in 2017 there were 422 overdose deaths involving opioids in Minnesota.

Thank you again for your consideration to donate. If you are unable to help monetarily, please take a moment to share with family and friends.
