Hi! My name is Catalina de la Peña, and I am a sophomore at Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart. As many of you know, Mrs. Caravajal, one of Carrollton’s high school math teachers, is currently in the hospital in critical condition due to COVID-19. She is an incredible teacher who has always gone above and beyond to care for her students, and I believe it is time for us to do the same. Here is some background information for you guys:


Mrs. Carvajal has been working hard her whole life. She lived in Cuba where she was a calculus professor at University of Havana. She sent her children to America when they were young to give them a better life while she stayed behind. In 2008, she was able to come to America and after 11 years, she was reunited with her family. When she came to the United States, she worked hard to be able to provide for herself and her family. She took different day jobs while at night studied to better her English and get her Mathematics degree. After receiving her degree in mathematics, she joined the Carrollton community in 2017 and has been here ever since. 


On November 24, she tested positive for COVID-19. She even tried teaching at home while she had COVID, but after seven days of being diagnosed, she was rushed to the hospital due to intense shortness of breath. For two weeks around Thanksgiving, she was in critical condition at the hospital. During Christmas, she was finally showing signs of recovery and was able to go home. Unfortunately, a week later she was rushed into the hospital again. Five days ago, she was intubated and is currently in critical condition at Baptist Hospital.


During these past months Mrs. Carvajal has not been able to continue teaching. I know that, as a community, we can work together to help her in any way we can.
