My name is Junior and I lost my father to COVID19. This is my story …….
Today is April 12, 2020, at 2:45pm, I lost my father. Today was the first time in 2 weeks that my wife, daughters, mother and sister were allowed to see him and say our final goodbye. I haven't been able to be by my father's side when he was admitted to Kings County Hospital.
Via Facetime, we witnessed how the doctor disconnected him from the ventilator and 10 minutes later he passed away. Unfortunately he was unconscious and unresponsive. The doctors tried to save him but after 3 unresponsive blood transfusions and unresponsive to dialysis, there was no sign of improvement. His condition was worsing. We had only 1 option at this point, According to the doctor ….
Option 1: We can keep him on an artificial ventilator, where he would be transported to a rehab center in a vegetable state to keep him alive. But …. Due to the lack of nurses available and the refusal of nurses to take care of covid 19 patients on artificial ventilators, they couldn’t guarantee proper care.
We could not bear the thought of leaving my father alone without proper care, so we asked for the Doctor’s recommendation: “There were not enough nurses or doctors to “deal” with Covid 19 patients that are sedated. In my opinion, if this was a family member of mine, Your best option is to disconnect your father.”
Today we lost a beloved father, husband, grandfather and a friend. He was a dog lover, father of 2. He loved to sing, have long conversations with just about anyone about the beauty of life, He had a strong sense of spirituality, and extremely witty. He loved his grandchildren the most, he still had dreams!
He wanted to be there when his granddaughters turned 15 y/o and participated in their Quinceanera where he wished it take place in his hometown, Cuatzingo, Puebla - Mexico.
He was a great cook and had dreams of reopening a new restaurant in Queens, New York.
His final wish was to be buried next to his daughter in Mexico. We only have 6 days to keep him in the hospital and find a funeral home to transfer him. At this time funeral homes in New York are overfilled, so we are doing everything possible to fly him back home. If that's not an option, then we would try to find him a burial spot in New York or have him cremated. All contributions will go to helping with his burial expenses. Please help us fulfill his final wish.
Thank you so much for your help!
Sincerely,
The Cortez Family
