My boyfriend Randy is an above knee amputee. About 15 years ago Randy went to a doctor for a hip replacement, but instead the Doctor recommended he perform a typical surgery to scrape damaged cartilage from previous high school sports injuries. Over time during healing from the procedure, Randy began to experience pain and oozing from his knee. His knee was not getting better, only worse and ended up getting infected. Once again the Doctor suggested that he would be a perfect candidate for a new procedure, osteointeintegration, that would provide him with a state of the art prosthetic leg, if he decided to agree to amputate his leg above the knee, he would be a "poster boy" for wounded veterans. Randy experienced so much pain, he decided to do the amputation. After the surgery and promises, he was told that certain parts of the osteointegration procedure and prosthetic were not approved here in the states and they were unable to do it. Randy experienced extreme phantom pain and fell into a depression. Over the years he has tried prosthetics that haven't fit well and have caused pain, swelling, and sores. It's difficult to get properly fit when you're an above knee amputee. So now the leading world specialist, Doctor Dr. Madouris, is here in New York performing the surgery on a trial basis in order to be able to get the procedure approved. Randy is on the list for the surgery. His insurance will not pay for the whole procedure and additional expenses like therapy and the VGK prosthetic needed for his recovery.
So I'm reaching out to friends, family, or anyone who can help Randy on this journey. Randy's been waiting nine years for this opportunity and I pray that you can find it in your heart to give, even if it's just $5.
Thank you for taking the time to read Randy's story. God Bless.
