Randy Word bicycle crash

Donation protected
Randy Word was in a serious crash at Alpenrose Velodrome on August 30, 2018, where he flipped over his handlebars and into a cement wall at a high speed. He was taken by ambulance to the ER at OHSU. He suffered multiple broken ribs, a punctured/collapsed lung, and road rash like crazy. But the helmet did its job and the medical experts are not seeing signs that he has any brain injury or spinal injury. He was in ICU for 45 hours, then spent almost another full day in the hospital before he was released on Sept. 2, 2018. During that time he was in ICU, he had to have a chest tube in place to allow the air to escape from places it didn't belong. In addition to the road rash there was major hematoma to back and hip regions.

Randy is currently home, healing multiple fractures on eight ribs, pneumothorax, regrowing skin in the places he's missing it, and allowing the massive swelling and numbness in his hip and back to recede. Despite the seriousness of his injuries and the long healing time anticipated by the doctors, Randy is upbeat and looking forward to being active again.

While juggling the responsibilities of supporting his family by running his businesses as a self-employed individual, Randy inadvertently let one health insurance policy lapse on July 31 with the new one not scheduled to start until September 1, 2018.   Randy earns the bulk of income for his family, and he is currently unable to work while he's still in this critical stage of healing. All of these costs for the hospital, doctor, tests, ambulance, and the myriad of other costs that come from sustaining and surviving traumatic, life threatening injuries are just starting to pour in.

The funds raised will go toward immediate and ongoing medical costs, ambulance costs, ER, and ICU costs, as well as extensive specialty testing, doctor, and other hospital costs. Any extra funds raised may help covering basic day to day living expenses while Randy recovers.

This need is urgent to cover unexpected and extensive expenses incurred during a short, inadvertent lapse in medical insurance.
