Randy Spangenberg's Medical Expenses

Donation protected
Hello, I am Randy Spangenberg's daughter Madison. My family and I are creating this gofundme to try and reach out for help for my father by raising funds to help assist with all of the medical expenses from the compliations of a back surgery.

Randy has had back pain for around nine months. He started off by going to pain management for seven months to try and work through the back pain he was experiencing. Throughout those seven months, the pain had only gotten worse. Starting from his back, going to his hip and eventually his leg. At this point, he was left with no other option but to schedule his surgery.

On November 1st, 2022, Randy had an L4 & L5 back fusion in which was supposed to last four hours but instead lasted eight hours.

During surgery, the surgeon caused a dura tear in which leaked out spinal fluid and exposed nerves. Doctors expressed that dural tears for the L4 & L5 back fusion only occur five percent of the time. Following the finding of the Dura tear, Randy was made to lay flat for 48 hours to ensure that the Dura tear was properly reparied.

Days following the surgery, Randy discovered that he had no feeling in his left leg below the knee and no control of bladder and bowel movements. From the leg pain he experienced post surgery, Randy was given an MRI in which a Hematoma was discovered. After six days Randy was sent to St. V's where they had a neurosurgeon on hand to remove the Hematoma. Following the removal of the Hematoma, the neurosurgeon had placed a drain to relieve pressure and not allow for another Hematoma to form. This surgery was only supposed to last roughly an hour, but instead lasted four. When radiology had done tests on Randy, the drain was knocked out from his back.

Post Hematoma surgery, Randy was set to be discharged to go to rehab. However, when conducting the tests for Randy to be cleared, blood clots were discovered in his leg.

Since November 1st, Randy has remained in the hospital. The doctors don't have any knowledge of when he will return to normal or if he will even return to normal. Randy now wears a brace on his left foot to help with the dropfoot that occurred from this surgery. There was another Hematoma discovered by radiology and they are monitoring the situation this time considering that they will not be performing another surgery for this Hematoma. Currently he is at St. Charles in acute therapy to relearn how to walk again and regain the strength in his legs.

We understand that during this holiday season, families aren't always able to help support. Anything helps and we ask that if you are unable to help, we would greatly appreciate if you shared this page.

Thank You!
