The Random Passage Site (operated under Cape Random Trust Inc.), is a not-for-profit, registered charity organization that is located in the resettled community named White Point, adjacent to New Bonaventure, some 18 km from Trinity, on the east coast of Newfoundland. It comprises approximately 3 acres, and 12 buildings portraying what is thought to be a typical Newfoundland fishing station from the mid-18th century to the turn of the 19th century.
The Site offers the visitor a portal into the story of Newfoundland; our story of settlement. There is no other Site in the province, which can give the visitor a tangible, visceral representation of life in outport Newfoundland in the early 1800s. It is truly a very special place, "a step back in time" as referred to by many visitors and an essential part of the story of early settlement and the fishing history that is told at other sites in our region - the mercantile history of Trinity; the formation of the Fishermen's Protective Union in Port Union; the seal hunt and subsistence living in Elliston and the overview of the East Coast Fishery in Bonavista.
However, in the past number of years our visitation has decreased and therefore so has our revenue generation from admissions. Funding has been limited in our operations and on-going maintenance to what was to be temporary wooden structures has not happened as quickly as we would like, and this has led to further deterioration to the point that the buildings are now in desperate need of repairs. We are now in a campaign to raise funds to assist with these repairs to ensure the Site's future stability and continued operation.
We are now embarking on a process to build on the Site’s early successes and develop a quality interpretive experience based on Newfoundland’s coastal fishery and settlement of the early 18th and 19th centuries. This will take place through new programming, hands-on learning visitor experiences and traditional demonstrations of what would take place "In a Day's Work". In order to do so however we need your assistance to ensure the buildings where our programming will take place are in good condition.
Our Board and employee’s are very passionate about the continuation of the work at the Random Passage Site and with your help we hope that this can continue.
