Sam Altman says scarce computer memory may be better used in data centers than in our personal computers.

We heard him. We looked at the AI industry. And we thought: finally, someone is standing up for the machines.

Your second Chrome tab can wait.

Welcome to RAM Aid: a satirical appeal for AI with a real mission. We’re raising money to buy an NVIDIA DGX Spark and donate it to a US-based independent research group working on open AI or AI safety.

That’s an actual AI workstation with an NVIDIA GPU and 128 GB of shared system memory. Not a commemorative JPEG. Not a certificate. A real computer, for real researchers, in a real box. (The graphics card in our cover image is an illustration.)

Our first goal is $8,500. That’s intentionally more than the machine’s sticker price, to allow for purchase taxes, shipping, packaging and payment processing, as well as reasonable legal or accounting expenses directly related to this fundraiser if needed. We’ll keep costs as low as practical and share a breakdown of actual expenses. Prices and availability can change, so we’ll check before buying.

If we raise enough to cover the first machine and another, we plan to buy more and distribute them to other suitable US research groups. Think of it as a memory upgrade for the public good.

We’ll look for researchers who can use and accept the hardware. If one group can’t take it, we’ll look for another suitable US-based group. No lab has agreed to receive a machine yet, and no organization is endorsing this campaign.

The organizer plans to receive proceeds into a separate bank account under their control, buy the equipment and arrange delivery. We’ll keep records, share updates and provide redacted receipts. There is no intended personal compensation or funding for the organizer’s businesses.

Are you a US-based lab that would like to be considered? Once the fundraiser is live, use the organizer contact option to tell us about your research, link to your public work and explain how you’d use a DGX Spark. Please don’t send a private address or sensitive personal information in your initial message. A request doesn’t guarantee selection.

GoFundMe’s standard US personal fundraiser transaction fee is 2.9% plus $0.30 per donation. Donations are not guaranteed to be tax-deductible. If we can’t buy and deliver a DGX Spark, or have too little left for another machine, we plan to donate the available funds, after campaign expenses, to a suitable US nonprofit supporting open AI or AI-safety research, once it confirms it can accept them. If that isn’t possible, we’ll seek refunds where GoFundMe permits them; refunds cannot be guaranteed after funds have been transferred.

A grassroots response to an industry that has almost everything. Except, apparently, your 32GB.

This is independent satire. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Sam Altman, OpenAI, NVIDIA or any research lab. Altman did not ask anyone to donate RAM.
