Mataya Mitschke has always been the kind of person who works hard, pushes through challenges, and shows up for the people and animals she loves. Horses have always been a huge part of her life, and along with working as an agricultural parts technician, she spends countless hours boarding and training horses. Her life has always been built around dedication, physical work, and caring for others.
In November of 2024, everything changed.
While working with one of the horses, Mataya was kicked directly in her right hip with tremendous force. The impact crushed her hip joint into her pelvis and caused damage to her spine. What initially seemed like an injury she could push through quickly turned into the beginning of a long and painful journey.
Like many hardworking people in agriculture, Mataya tried everything she could to heal and get back to normal. She pursued countless treatments and alternative therapies, hoping her body would recover the way it had from past accidents. She continued going in and out of work over the past year and a half, pushing through intense pain just to keep going. Unfortunately, despite her determination, the pain has only continued to worsen.
Today, everyday tasks have become extremely difficult. Walking is often unbearable, and the physical work that once defined her life is no longer possible. After finally seeing both a spine specialist and a hip surgeon, doctors determined that she requires a very specialized surgery to repair the damaged hip joint.
Because this procedure is so complex, only a handful of surgeons in Canada perform it. After months of waiting within the healthcare system without progress while her condition continued to deteriorate, Mataya is now pursuing a private surgical option in Montreal.
The surgery alone costs $24,000, not including travel expenses. She will need to fly to Montreal and remain there for approximately five days for the procedure and initial recovery. After that, she will begin a long rehabilitation journey expected to last 5–6 months.
This has been an incredibly difficult time for Mataya. Being unable to work while facing the reality of such a large medical expense has been overwhelming. Anyone who knows her knows she is not someone who asks for help easily, but right now she truly needs the support of her community.
We are hoping to raise funds to help cover the cost of her surgery and travel so she can focus on what matters most — healing, regaining her mobility, and getting back to the life she loves.
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. If you are unable to donate, sharing this page would mean the world to us.
Mataya would also be open to any other fundraising ideas that family and friends around her may have in mind!
Thank you for taking the time to read Mataya’s story and for supporting her on the road to recovery.
