Our friend Doug Johnson went into St Francis hospital back in November ‘25 stayed there 12 days and was then sent to Glengariff Rehab center where he was for over 4 weeks until last Monday 1/19 when he was rushed unconscious in the middle of the night to Glen Cove hospital with kidney and liver failure and Covid on top of it all. GC hospital had to pump out 8 liters of excess fluid and had Doug intubated and on life support to keep him alive. The good news is that 10 days later though still in the Critical Care unit ( 2nd floor room 8) he is off of life support, conscious and speaking in a lighthearted way about his experiences with the catheter and other hospital pleasantries.
Doug has a blood infection which is hampering the recovery of his kidneys so he will probably not be going home anytime soon. Though he has medical insurance he has lost his phone and has copays and a raft of medical expenses piling up. Having recently been divorced, living modestly in an apt in Glen Cove, there will be a mountain of expenses to dig out from . If each of us chipped in a little bit we could send a really positive message that you have many friends who love you and are pulling for you. As an only child with his parents deceased, and not having a bunch of cousins, nephews and other relatives to call in on him, a successful go fund me effort would be a tangible signal that yes, indeed, Doug you have many friends. That message would be powerful to someone who has seen life seemingly slipping away, but in the past day he seems to have found the old buoyancy that makes him a guy people like to be around.
