Rallying around John Higgins

This page is for the benefit of John and Lori Higgins, a great couple who are going through a tough time as John fights cancer. John is a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and he's also a good friend, a mentor, and a continuous source of entertainment in our lives. John’s fight has had a physical, emotional, and financial impact on he and his family.

John has faced ongoing health challenges since being diagnosed with liver cancer in 2021. John’s care and treatment have included radiation, chemotherapy, and clinical trials. His care for the first several years was being provided by the UChicago Medicine. John’s cancer has unfortunately spread ……. When treatment ended at UChicago Medicine, John sought out alternatives for treatment as he continued his courageous fight.

John’s courageous fight is to live every day available to him – and to spend it with those close to him. This includes going to his granddaughters and grandsons, meeting with his friends for coffee to chat, participating in counseling sessions with other cancer patients, and much more.

John has found the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota had a new clinical trial which he was a perfect match. This treatment is extending his life by preventing the spread of the cancer further. This requires John and Lori (or a friend) to travel weekly to Minnesota for treatments. The costs of the travel include gas (or airfare in the winter), hotel rooms, meals, etc. and have become burdensome. In some months, the costs have been $12,000 – and this ain’t staying at the Ritz. (I can hear John say that, btw!)
