The Monday before Thanksgiving, our world changed in an instant when I was rushed into emergency surgery for an appendectomy at 20 weeks pregnant. In the weeks that followed, I faced several complications, and at 23 weeks, my water prematurely broke. Through it all, our baby remained stable and continued to hold on—giving us hope as we prayed for more time before meeting him.

To say this experience has shaken our world is an understatement. We are incredibly grateful for the love and support from family and friends near and far. That support has helped us navigate this frightening and uncertain chapter with strength and hope.

Our sweet baby boy ultimately made his early arrival on December 23rd. Nolan Thomas Badini Makishima is currently resting in the NICU. He was born at 24 weeks and 6 days, weighing just 1 lb 12 oz and measuring 12 inches long. From the very beginning, Nolan has shown us just how strong and resilient he is. His name means nobility and strength, and he lives up to it every single day.

Aila is already the most loving big sister and cannot wait for the day Nolan finally comes home. Our hearts are full of gratitude as Nolan continues to do well and receives incredible care from the NICU team.

Nolan is now two months old and growing stronger every day. We anticipate another 4–6 weeks in the NICU before he is ready to come home. While we are deeply thankful for the care he is receiving, this journey has brought significant emotional and financial challenges. The months ahead will require time away from work so we can be fully present for Nolan’s care and recovery.

We have already been carried by so much kindness—meals, messages, check-ins, and countless gestures of love—and we are endlessly grateful.
