Rally for Randy

Randall Auster, also known as Randy, is a man cherished by many. He's a loving father, a grandpa who never misses the chance to see his grandchildren, a soon-to-be great grandfather, and he bravely served our nation in the U.S. Army. Randy is the kind of person neighbors always speak of fondly. He's the type of friend everyone wants to have in their circle. He's also a generous man who would give the shirt off of his back for a stranger. After spending 25 wonderful years as a Quality Engineer at Boeing, Randy spent the first couple of years enjoying retirement with his best friend, a Shih-Tzu/Yorkshire Terrier, named Charlie. Life was simple and sweet.

Then, in a matter of seconds, everything changed.

On Thanksgiving night, 2019, while Randy was in the car with his step-son, daughter-in-law, and 13-year-old grandson, coming home from dinner, the unthinkable happened. A car pulled in front of their vehicle without any warning, and an accident occurred.

Randy sustained multiple skull fractures, broken facial bones, and a punctured lung. The accident resulted in the need for a tracheotomy so that he can breathe, as well as a feeding tube due to his inability to swallow.

To say that the past five months have been an uphill battle is a significant understatement. Randy has gone between the ICU, a subacute hospital, and recently, a skilled nursing facility. It hasn't been a straight line of progress either, as oftentimes, it's been one step forward and two steps back. And amid recovery at the skilled nursing facility, Randy contracted Coronavirus, sending him back to the ICU for another extended stay.

Emotions ran high the day Randy finally came home on May 2nd. There was great joy as family, friends, and neighbors cheered for him while the EMTs wheeled him out of the ambulance and into his home, a place he had so badly missed for nearly half a year. However, there was also fear for the long road ahead.

Randy is still under quarantine and requires around-the-clock nursing care, which is not covered by insurance. Randy's daily regimen includes physical therapy, as well as speech and occupational therapies, some of which are covered by insurance. The nightmare isn't over, but it seems that we are heading towards recovery.

The ultimate goal is to have Randy in a rehabilitation program to help him recover. However, it will take monumental amounts of effort from Randy, in addition to some financial support, to overcome this great tragedy.

There is no such thing as giving too little – every bit helps. Even the five-dollar sacrifice of your morning latte for one day from 25,000 people would help lighten the heavy financial and resulting emotional burden. On behalf of Randy, we thank you in advance for your gracious support. After all, Randy would do the same for you
