40 Years of Arts, Literature and Great Films
#smallbusinessrelief
The Ryder magazine published its very first issue on April 1, 1979. It was no April Fool's prank, but the start of a lifelong commitment by a young editor passionate about the arts, journalism and great movies. About three months later, the same young man screened his first film, HIS GIRL FRIDAY (with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, and naturally about journalists), and The Ryder Film Series was born.

Now, after forty years, Peter LoPilato is approaching his 500th issue of the magazine and has screened over 3,000 arthouse films from around the world. Many of the films Peter has screened over these years would have never made it to Bloomington. Until the last decade or so, many of these films would have been a challenge to find online or even in the very best video stores.

These gifts to the community have made the world a little smaller for those living in Bloomington. We all know more about the arts, literature and film - local and global - thanks to the magazine and Series.

In addition to readers and patrons, so many artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, gallery and club owners, record stores, promoters, festival organizers and many others have also benefited by The Ryder's willingness and interest in collaboration and sharing the stories of just about anyone with something interesting to say. The magazine has been an outlet and promotional tool for every arts organization in the community and countless writers were given their first professional writing opportunities with The Ryder.

It is safe to say, The Ryder magazine and Film Series are literal institutions in this community and vital parts of its arts and cultural fabric.

Now, The Ryder Needs Your Help!
Like many, the COVID-19 pandemic has hit The Ryder hard. Movies cannot be screened in person in Ryder venues, virtual film screenings generate little revenue, and advertising budgets for the service industry have been coopted to cover operating expenses by many past advertisers to keep their businesses afloat. Yet, The Ryder forges on with hope.

We Can Do This!
Please take the time to think about how your life has been enhanced by The Ryder - whether it was something you read, a show you might have missed without seeing it promoted, insights into a new book or business in town, or the latest film from Jean Luc Godard or Kelly Reichardt or Barry Jenkins.

Then think about that experience and perhaps the many others you have had over the years and how you might be able to pay that forward so you and others can enjoy similar experiences in the future. It is a tough and uncertain time, without a doubt. It is also a time to help others if you are able.

Funds will be used to cover operating expenses and continue to keep paid staff employed until advertising revenue begins to steadily increase.

Thank you, THANK YOU!
