To make a very long story a bit shorter, about two months ago my father, Steven Green, was diagnosed with a brain tumor after experiencing a series of seizures. As a result of having the tumor surgically removed my father suffered a stroke leaving his left leg weak, the left side of his face partially paralyzed, and his left arm completely paralyzed. After an intense battle (still ongoing) with the insurance company, delaying his much needed therapy, they finally approved acute rehab for one week. Along with 24 hours a week of three different therapies to recover from the stroke, my father is also undergoing daily radiation in Portland and oral chemo for six weeks as the pathology on the tumor came back cancerous. Due to the type of brain tumor, the chemo has been specialized to fit his treatment plan, therefore insurance refuses to cover the full amount. Our biggest obstacle throughout this entire endeavor has undoubtedly been the insurance company denying claims around every corner. With every diagnosis there has been a denial letter from Anthem. Whatever their reason, we refuse to let them win. We refuse to let them dictate my fathers recovery.
My father served over 20 years in the United States Army, followed by 20 additional years in the Maine State Police force in the Portland and Lakes Region area. My mom, Laurie Green, has worked at Bridgton Hospital for 15 years, then continued on to travel nursing. After settling back home to be close to family she took a job at Mercy Hospital in Portland. Just over a year later she has had to stop working to take care of my dad full time due to the sudden onset of his illness. Both my parents have selflessly given for so long and gave their lives to more than just their jobs and communities, they have raised two children and given them the world.
I want to take this moment to thank everyone who has already helped by stopping by with meals and care baskets as well as helping make our home more accessible for my father to come home. The support has been overwhelming and we appreciate all the love and well wishes.
