Peter Lopez, or “Pete S’Lopez” as he likes to call himself, was riding in the Tour de Paris bicycle rally in Texas when he suffered an acute heart attack at mile 28 of 35. He fell from his bike unconscious and his fiancèe, Kristi, frantically searched for help. Fortunately, two fellow cyclists (Kathy and Ann) took action and performed CPR before the ambulance arrived. Peter was rushed to the Paris Regional Medical Center operating room and received several heart stents. He was treated in the ICU for 7 days where he remained comatose and suffered sporadic seizures. The doctors diagnosed him with anoxic brain injury (injury from lack of oxygen) and was given an unfavorable prognosis. His family and fiancèe knew he still had a fighting chance, so they were determined to get him transferred to Dallas for a second opinion. After several failed attempts, Pete's kindhearted friend contacted the right people and got him placed in one of the top-tier neurology ICU's at UT Southwestern. He was airlifted to the hospital, where he remains comatose while his family and friends are all praying for him to wake up.

Pete is loved by many - he’s our dedicated father, silly brother, adored uncle, adventurous grandfather, inspiring friend, and loyal fiancé. When he isn't designing mechanical equipment at work, Pete loves to cycle and tinker in his garage. His grandchildren believe he is the best inventor there is. He and Kristi even have plans to build a workshop for him on the land they purchased less than a month ago. And shortly after they closed on the land, Pete had asked Kristi to marry him after 20 years of commitment.
