Hello, my name is Jaime and I am starting this on behalf of my best friend, Amber, and her boyfriend Larry. Amber is more than just a friend--she is like a sister to me! This entire ordeal has been very emotionally taxing for them both, and any way I can help, I'll be there for them all along the way. Please read their story below and consider donating. Thank you!
Larry and Amber went out on a hunting trip starting Saturday, September 27th. Unfortunately, Tuesday, September 30th Larry ended up having an accident and injured his leg. After being unable to walk, in excruciating pain, and had no feeling in his foot, he was life-flighted to an area hospital before transferring to a hospital closer to home. Larry is currently admitted at Renown Hospital in Reno, NV. Today, October 7th, will be their 7th day there.
Back Story:
After being admitted for 3 days with no definitive answer as to what was wrong other than a misdiagnosis of: having a small tear in the muscle, torn tendon and Rhabdomyolysis… that wasn’t just the case unfortunately.
Luckily a new surgeon came to work on Friday, October 3rd that looked into his case and caught the real diagnosis immediately. “Compartment Syndrome”. This is a condition that requires emergency surgery within the first 6-8 hours of symptomatic onset for a good prognosis. However, unfortunately, Larry was in sheer agony for 3 days as they had misdiagnosed him and he missed that critical window.
They finally performed the emergency surgery the evening of Friday, October 3rd to relieve pressure from the compartment syndrome and assess the damage. During surgery they placed a Wound-VAC in hopes to regenerate some of the muscle and tissue and wrapped his leg up. After surgery he was unstable and passed out twice due to shock. The trauma/ICU team was called which resulted in a blood transfusion.
Larry had his 2nd surgery on Sunday, October 5th to reassess for any progress. Unfortunately, the entire lateral muscle in his calf was necrotic and had no contractility. They ended up removing the peroneus longus and brevis muscle, and then discovered a nicked artery, which they luckily repaired.
He is still at great risk for potentially losing his leg if he gets an infection. At this point, with multiple complications still arising, there is no estimated discharge date in sight yet. This experience has been emotional, mentally and physically draining for both Larry and Amber. Without either of them working at the moment and their continued stay at the hospital, they are in need of any assistance financially that could be given for current bills, future medical bills, food and essentials. Anything helps. They want to thank everyone for their continued support and prayers throughout this time.
We will continue to provide updates as they are available.
