A Heartfelt Update on Kai Ritchie from his mother, Stormy Schumann-Ritchie and family:
On the evening of May 5, 2025, tragedy struck when Kai Ritchie was involved in a devastating head-on collision on I-40 in Raleigh, NC. A drunk driver was driving the wrong way on the interstate, leading to this horrific accident.
Kai sustained severe injuries, including internal bleeding, which required emergency abdominal surgery. During this procedure, a portion of his small intestines was removed, but the medical team had to halt the operation due to his critically low blood pressure, despite administering blood transfusions.
The following day, he underwent a second surgery, where doctors placed a steel rod in his leg and used plates and screws to repair his femur, which was broken in two places. They also successfully wired together his shattered kneecap.
Surgery #3 involved reopening his abdomen to assess any further damage and to reattach his small intestines, which the surgeons were able to do. A fourth surgery is planned to address his broken hand.
In addition to these injuries, Kai has suffered from two broken ribs, lacerations on his liver, and numerous cuts and bruises across his body. His journey to recovery will be long and arduous, with months of physical therapy ahead.
In light of Kai’s extensive medical needs, we are organizing a fundraising campaign to help cover his medical bills. Any support you can provide will make a significant difference in his recovery journey. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
