Rally for Jayde

Just last month Jayde was focused on making the girls lacrosse team at Mountain Ridge High School, keeping up her good grades, getting ready for senior prom and graduation!

During the weeks leading up to and during tryouts Jayde experienced discomfort, fatigue, loss of feeling in her legs and then suddenly she could not stand on her own. She was taken to Primary Children's Hospital and admitted to the ICU as her condition caused respiratory issues and she needed assistance with breathing. She spent a week in ICU and is currently working with inpatient rehab for physical therapy to help with paralysis. She is not able to use her legs and her muscles are very weak and painful.

Jayde has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome which is a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. Jayde was paralyzed from her arms down. However, she is gaining strength and is currently learning to walk, stand, and move around once again.

Most people eventually make a full recovery from Guillain-Barré syndrome but it can take a long time. Jayde's full body paralysis is considered a severe case and her recovery is expected to be a lengthy one.

"She is getting better; she is not on breathing assistance any longer and is working with physical therapy in getting stronger."
