My name is Randall Paul. Together with my wife, Sarah, we want to thank you for taking the time to read this. We know many of you personally, and some we have yet to meet, but we are all connected by someone we care about deeply: Humberto Zazueta.

I have never started a GoFundMe before. Frankly, I never thought I’d know someone in a position where they couldn't cover their medical expenses or the costly downtime associated with a major recovery. But today, our friend Humberto is in urgent need of our help.

I know many of you have reached out to Humberto for a helping hand in the past. If you have, I’d bet that every single time you needed something, Humberto did absolutely everything in his power to help you.

Lately, Humberto has been working incredibly hard to get his life and health in order. He stopped drinking, was actively working on quitting smoking, and was taking better care of his body through regular exercise. He and I recently started surfing together, and the positive changes he was making were truly inspiring.

On Saturday, July 27th, Humberto woke up early to catch the sunrise at the beach and get in the water. But as he exited the ocean, he felt severely dizzy and nearly fainted. After resting in the shade of a kind beachgoer, he managed to drive home.

What followed is a medical nightmare no one should ever have to experience:

The First Clinic: Realizing he needed immediate medical help, he drove to a local clinic, where they told him he needed to get to a hospital right away.

The Walk to Saint Luke's: Terrified he might pass out behind the wheel, Humberto chose to walk to Saint Luke's Hospital in 90-plus-degree heat. Upon arrival, he was told he needed $20,000 USD upfront just to be seen.

The Diagnosis: Unable to pay that fee, he walked to another clinic. There, an EKG confirmed the worst: he was actively experiencing a heart attack.

The Wait: He took a cab to the Dr. Raul A. Carrillo General Hospital, where he was stabilized. However, due to a lack of local specialized care, he spent five agonizing days in a room without a heart monitor, experiencing intermittent, severe chest pain while waiting for an opening with a cardiologist.

Thankfully, he was finally transferred to La Paz today. Once he is settled, Sarah and I will go see him, and I will update this page with any news.

This fundraising effort is deeply personal to Sarah and me, and I know it is to many of you as well. Humberto is a kind man and a wonderful human being. What started as a business relationship has grown into a brotherhood. Let’s be completely transparent—Humberto has his flaws, just like the rest of us. But what makes this so heartbreaking is that this medical emergency struck right when he was actively turning his life around.

This setback and the upcoming recovery are going to be incredibly difficult for him and his family, both emotionally and financially.

My ask of you is simple: Skip a couple of expensive nights out this week. Stay home with your partner, have a real discussion about what truly matters in life, and celebrate how important you are to one another. Then, take the money you saved and donate it here to help get Humberto back on his feet—and back on his surfboard.

Once he is recovered, don't ever hesitate to call him when you are in need; you know he will put his life on hold to help you.

Francamente, jamás pensé que conocería a alguien que se encontrara en una situación en la que no pudiera cubrir sus gastos médicos o afrontar el costoso periodo de inactividad que conlleva una recuperación importante. Dejó de beber, trabajaba activamente para dejar de fumar y cuidaba mejor su cuerpo haciendo ejercicio con regularidad. Hace poco empezamos a surfear juntos, y los cambios positivos que estaba logrando eran realmente inspiradores.

El sábado 27 de julio, Humberto se despertó temprano para ver el amanecer en la playa y meterse al agua. Sin embargo, al salir del mar, sintió un mareo intenso y estuvo a punto de desmayarse. Tras descansar a la sombra gracias a la ayuda de una persona amable que estaba en la playa, logró conducir hasta su casa.

Lo que siguió fue una pesadilla médica que nadie debería tener que vivir:

La primera clínica: Al darse cuenta de que necesitaba atención médica inmediata, condujo hasta una clínica local, donde le indicaron que debía trasladarse a un hospital de inmediato.

El camino a Saint Luke's: Aterrado ante la posibilidad de desmayarse mientras conducía, Humberto decidió ir caminando al Hospital Saint Luke's bajo un calor sofocante (con temperaturas superiores a los 32 °C). Al llegar, le informaron que necesitaba pagar 20.000 dólares por adelantado tan solo para ser atendido.

El diagnóstico: Al no poder pagar esa suma, caminó hacia otra clínica. Allí, un electrocardiograma confirmó lo peor: estaba sufriendo un infarto en ese preciso momento.

La espera: Tomó un taxi hasta el Hospital General Dr. Raúl A. Carrillo, donde lograron estabilizarlo. No obstante, debido a la falta de atención especializada en la zona, pasó cinco días angustiosos en una habitación sin monitor cardíaco, sufriendo dolores torácicos intensos e intermitentes mientras esperaba a que hubiera un hueco disponible con un cardiólogo.

Afortunadamente, hoy por fin fue trasladado a La Paz. Una vez que esté instalado, Sarah y yo iremos a visitarlo, y actualizaré esta página con cualquier novedad.

Esta iniciativa de recaudación de fondos es algo profundamente personal para Sarah y para mí, y sé que también lo es para muchos de ustedes. Humberto es un hombre bondadoso y un ser humano maravilloso. Lo que comenzó como una relación profesional se ha convertido en una hermandad. Seamos totalmente transparentes: Humberto tiene sus defectos, como todos nosotros. Pero lo que hace que esto sea tan desgarrador es que esta emergencia médica ocurrió justo cuando él estaba logrando cambiar el rumbo de su vida.

Este contratiempo y el proceso de recuperación que le espera serán increíblemente difíciles para él y su familia, tanto emocional como económicamente.
