On Wednesday, February 8th, Roy went to bed completely healthy. When he woke up the next day something felt wrong with his right foot. Not thinking much of it he tried putting on socks and shoes. This is when he noticed there was definitely something wrong. He and his wife Amy were concerned enough they decided to go to the emergency room.
Without going into too many gory details, Roy was diagnosed with a flesh eating bacteria. He was given the news that he was losing anywhere from part of his foot to potentially up to his knee. By 11:00 pm Thursday night he was out of surgery and no longer had half of his right foot. Heavy antibiotics were administered and another surgery would take place in two days to determine if any more of his foot or leg would need to be removed.
Monday, February 13th, Roy went back in for his 2nd surgery. Everything looked as good as could be expected. They did not have to remove anymore of his foot. He would need to remain on aggressive antibiotics for 45 days via a picc line and he cannot put pressure on the amputated foot for 3 weeks. Friday, February 17th he finally got to go home and now the fun begins.
Not including medical expenses, there are other things that Roy will now need. He will need a bathroom remodel to create a walk in shower. He needs an adjustable bed. They have already had to find a power lifting recliner, knee scooter, wheel chair, walker and many other items. These are just the immediate needs. There will be more things needed along the way and the expenses are adding up.
If you are able to donate please do. If you are unable to help financially please drop Roy a quick text, call, card or prayer. As you can imagine, losing part of a limb can be quite the mental challenge as well as physical. Roy is very quick to help others and our community. It’s our turn to return the favor.
