Hello everyone, my husband Steve and I are parents to the strong and brave Ramon Barrera. As many of you know, at the beginning of the year he was having issues walking and eventually stopped walking altogether. It was early February when we found out why. Our outgoing lil cute 4-year-old was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He has been classified as "Standard-High Risk." We have a long road ahead of us.
The good news is, there is a CURE! It is a 2-year and 11-month process to be cancer-free. Ramon receives all his chemotherapy treatments from UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland.
We have gone through the first phase of his chemotherapy plan, which was called "Induction," and lasted a month. In the first month, he went through 3 lumbar punctures and a few different chemotherapies through his port, orally, and the lumbar punctures.
We are now in the second phase called "Consolidation," and it lasts 2 months. It started in the last week of March. Since then, he has had 4 lumbar punctures along with chemo through his port, orally, and lumbar punctures.
Unfortunately, after his last lumbar puncture and chemo, he developed a fever which landed us in the Children's Hospital Emergency Room and being admitted for a short stay. During that stay, he received antibiotics and his 2nd blood transfusion.
Which leads us to where we are now. We have reached a point where we are in need of a bit more support. Steve has been off work for a while but has been back when he can. I am currently on maternity leave until baby #5 makes her debut in early July. We are trying to raise money for unexpected medical bills, transportation including gas and maintenance of our vehicles, food/snacks during and after chemo. As much as we prepare, his treatment changes depending on his blood counts. Anything is appreciated more than you know!
