It is with profound heartbreak we announce the passing of Courtney Schmalz, who left us too soon on November 9th, 2025, at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, AB.
Born on July 7th, 1996 in Edmonton, AB, Courtney grew into a compassionate and vibrant woman. Her warmth touched everyone she met both personally and professionally. Courtney had a gift for making people feel seen and cared for. Courtney loved ferociously, always seeing the best in her people and making sure they knew she was in their corner. Her smile could lift the hearts of those she was with even on the heaviest of days. Whether she was laughing with her sister, supporting her friends, or creating beautiful memories with her family, Courtney possessed a type of love that was gentle, genuine, and unwavering. Before going on maternity leave she proudly served as an ICU nurse at Sturgeon and a Long Term Care nurse at Westview. Courtney had dedicated herself to helping others in their most vulnerable moments. She seamlessly transitioned into a tender hearted mother who loved and cared for her baby boy.
In the greatest irony, Courtney who always gave her whole heart needed a new one. Courtney faced her uphill health battles with tremendous strength, positivity, faith, and gentleness – the same qualities that defined every part of her life.
During her short time at the Mazankowski Heart Institute, Courtney captured the hearts of her incredible team of health professionals. They were deeply invested in her care and well-being. Courtney was continuously grateful for the generous support she received. She always showed her gratitude towards her fellow nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, and support staff.
Courtney leaves behind the love of her life husband, Blake Schmalz; her son, Tommy Schmalz; parents, Derek and Cheryl Jones; sister, Morgan (Ryan) Jones; in-laws, Homer Schmalz and Steph (John) Towton; sister-in-law, Shelby (Davin) Chamney; nieces and nephews, Jaxson, Cali, and Lilah; aunts; uncles; cousins. Courtney’s feline companions, Annie, Athena, and, Oliver.
Courtney’s legacy of kindness, courage, faith, and unconditional love will live on through all those that crossed her path. Her memory will remain forever in our hearts.
A celebration of life will be held on November 30th 2025 at Central Social Hall Ellerslie located at 10014 12 Ave SW from 2pm-5pm. Attire is casual come and go when you can. We ask that if people can, please type out a story or memory you have with Courtney that can be made into a book and shared with Tommy when he is older. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations for those wishing to show their support to Tommy and Blake. Funds will be used towards supporting Blake and Tommy as well as an Education fund for Tommys future.
Our sweet Courtney is in the fight of her life. Last week, she was rushed to the hospital and was since diagnosed with Lymphocytic Myocarditis, and is currently on a life-supporting machine called ECMO. This treatment, along with strong medication, is giving her heart a chance to heal, but her recovery will be a long and difficult journey.
Courtney and her husband, Blake are also parents to their sweet 6 month-old son, Tommy. While Courtney focuses on fighting for her health, Blake is doing his best to balance caring for their baby and supporting his wife through this incredibly challenging time.
We are asking for support to help ease the financial burden this situation brings. Donations will go directly towards medical expenses, living costs, and and helping Blake and Tommy as they navigate this difficult road.
Courtney has always been such a strong, loving, and giving person, and now she needs our love and support more than ever. As an ICU nurse Courtney has always taken care of others, its time we take care of her. Any contribution - big or small- will make a difference, and we are so deeply grateful for the outpouring of kindness, prayers and encouragement.
Thank you for standing with Courtney, Blake and baby Tommy during this difficult time.
