Cancer. Not a word you want to hear, yet my dear friend Ruth and her family heard it just a few short weeks ago. Ruth is fighting Squamous Cell Carcinoma. It came upon her quickly and is growing rapidly. Chemo and radiation are the only options for treatment at this time, and they must start immediately. There will be numerous bills to pay and many weeks of daily travel expenses for her treatments. We can't all be there physically beside her through all of this, but we can help her and her family by easing their financial burden.
Why did I choose to create this GoFundMe campaign for Ruth?
Ruth is a very strong woman, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, devoted daughter, sister and friend. She is very dear to me. I've known her for over 20 years. These years as good friends have included so many wonderful times making cherished memories – our families camping together, celebrating birthdays through the years, attending graduation parties and weddings, and loving and spoiling our grandchildren. Ruth is so important to me and so many people, that I can't sit by and not help as much as I can.
Ruth's path to diagnosis and treatment:
In early May, Ruth began experiencing some tooth pain which led her to the dentist, and a referral to an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon pulled what he thought may be one of the problematic teeth. Unfortunately, he could see that there may have been an underlying, more serious cause for her pain, and collected tissue for a biopsy. The biopsy resulted as moderately differentiated Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the left mandible - cancer in her left lower jaw bone, as well as her lymph nodes on her left side. She was referred to a maxillofacial surgeon at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL, who had a team of doctors ready to surgically remove the cancer and rebuild her jaw. Unfortunately, the day prior to the surgery, it was discovered that the cancer is much more aggressive than originally thought, and now surgery is no longer an option. Her oncologist said that chemo and radiation were made to fight aggressive cancers, and that is the plan of action now. Immediately.

Ruth has a long journey ahead of her. She is such a strong person, and has taken wonderful care of her family, and been a help to so many others. Now it is OUR turn to help her.
