On August 8, 2019 Annabelle Carpenter was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Giloma (DIPG). Medical advances in the past years have improved survival rates for many pediatric cancers, but not DIPG. A DIPG diagnosis is always terminal. There is no cure, there is no effective treatment plan. Annabelle is expected to be with us for another 9-15 months. In an effort to extend her time with her family she will undergo a 6 week radiation treatment that is standard for DIPG patients.
Annabelle has always been the kindest most loving soul. Her grandmother remembers a visit to Meijer when she saw an older lady trying to get water and Annabelle went up to her and said "I can help you" and she did. In that same visit she saw an older gentleman in a motorized scooter and Annabelle walked up to him put her hand on his knee and said "are you ok" with genuine concern in her eyes. The old man had tears in his eyes. Everyone was always so amazed at how polite she was. She always remembers please and thank you and excuse me. Even now, she shows compassion for those around her by a touch of the face or looks deep in your eyes. Everywhere she goes everyone she meets loves her. She touches the hearts of everyone. Teaches us about love, caring, and a no nonsense way of looking at life. She is so pure and vibrant, her presence is unforgettable.
Annabelle's family and extended family will be supporting her at every step of the way. Her father Kacee Carpenter, mother Sarah Rader and her surviving grandparents intend to cherish every remaining moment and create memories to carry her spirit with them after she leaves us. The upcoming months will be challenging and difficult for her and her family. While there is no cure for Annabelle, we can support her family by alleviating some of the financial burdens associated with life with a terminally ill child.
