Reading achievement of low income students typically declines during summer vacation compared to their more economically advantaged peers – whose reading skill holds steady or increases modestly.
Studies show that students of middle income families have access to, on average, as much as 75 times as many books as students from lower income households.
The gap in reading achievement attributable to summer reading loss grows to reach anywhere from 1.5 – 3 years by the time the student has completed grade 6.
Is there a solution? If children read just six books over summer vacation, they will likely avoid summer reading loss – and students at Wenonah and William Perry have done so – teachers, parents, and assessments tell us this is true!
