Raising money to support Dan’s recovery…

Daniel Flude (or Fludey as many people know him) is husband to Emma, father to Joe and Sam and a great friend to so many. In mid December 2020, Dan suffered a terrible stroke and was rushed to hospital, where they identified he was having a brain hemorrhage and needed urgent brain surgery.

His family were told if he survived there was a good chance, he would not be able to swallow, talk or move. The operation lasted several hours as they battled to stop the bleed and save his life. Following the operation Dan was on life support & the doctors weren't sure he would survive.

However, Dan defied the medics. Eventually he came off life support and four months later he was moved to Homerton hospital to focus on a very slow rehabilitation. Having suffered severe brain trauma he now struggled to speak and had very limited movement in his right arm and leg.

Sadly, throughout these excruciating months, Dan’s family were not allowed to visit him because of covid restrictions, only able to video call once a week in which Dan couldn't talk or move. His family played him music, read the football results (hoping for a Chelsea victory), talked about his friends and the kids just hoping that he could understand them and would keep fighting.

A few months later Dan started to show signs of slow improvement. He was beginning to win his fight. He could finally breathe for himself and had managed to start swallowing which also meant he could eat on his own. He started to learn to speak again and did not give up, even though it was incredibly frustrating for him – a reflection of his amazing strength and determination.

After a total of 212 days in hospital Dan was finally allowed home, something we were scared would not happen and for a long time did not seem possible.

Until now, Dan has been receiving invaluable physio paid for by the NHS to help him gain movement in his arm and leg and to enable him to eventually climb stairs.

However, despite the obvious visible improvements from the physio, Dan and his family have tragically been informed that he is no longer entitled to any more sessions under the NHS and his only option is to pay for private treatment in order to continue his progress. Emma his wife has found an exceptional private physio who even after the first treatment has demonstrated how much more improvement Dan would make seeing a specialist with the necessary equipment.

The treatment is expensive and so we wanted to see if we could raise some funds to help Dan and Emma pay for a course of treatment that is so desperately needed, especially now that Emma has been made redundant. It is a miracle how far Dan has come but he still has a long way to go and helping to support this treatment would certainly make a huge difference to his life and those around him. (Each session costs £50 and it is estimated he will need one session a week for 2 years at a total cost of at least £5,200).

Emma, the boys and all his friends and family would be very grateful for any donation you can make to reach the target of £5,200.
