My name is Paula, I’m 18 years old, and I have a major goal: I want to study Filmmaking in the UK.

From a young age, I was home educated and my family and I traveled full-time for several years. This gave me the freedom to explore many different countries and immerse myself in various cultures which greatly influenced my interests and passions. The experiences I gained while traveling and meeting people from all walks of life shaped the way I view the world and it was during this time that my passion for film began to take root and grow.

Filmmaking has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was eleven I made my first film with my sister in South Africa - from writing the script to organising, shooting, and editing. This hands-on experience brought me immense joy and I quickly realised that film was what I truly wanted to pursue.

Over the years I have continued to follow this passion by taking the initiative to complete courses and internships as well as contributing to high-profile projects. I have worked on both independent films and professional sets, each experience pushing me further into the world of filmmaking. Last year I had the opportunity to work as an assistant director on a film project in Vienna, an exciting and intense experience that deepened my appreciation for the hard work, dedication and attention to detail required in film production.

I have now been accepted by several universities in England for a Bachelor course starting in September 2025. This is a huge step and an incredible opportunity for me to deepen my knowledge. Studying a Bachelor in Filmmaking in the UK feels like the next logical step for me. It’s not just about getting a degree - it’s about learning from people who share my passion, collaborating with many other like-minded students and being in a space where I can take my experiences to a whole new level.

One of the most memorable stops of our travels was the UK, where we settled for a year. Living near London in 2019 and 2020 gave me a deeper connection to the country and its vibrant creative scene. This experience, along with my years of travelling and self-directed learning, has reinforced my desire to study film in the UK. The country’s rich film culture as well as my love for the English language make it the ideal place for me to further my education.

The UK offers countless opportunities for aspiring filmmakers. It has a world-class film industry, renowned production facilities and access to top industry professionals. The international environment will enhance my language skills and expand my network with talented filmmakers from around the world. Graduating from a UK institution will also open doors to global job opportunities and career growth in the creative industry.

However, studying in the UK comes with significant costs. Tuition fees are around 60,000 Euros. And on top of that, living and accommodation expenses are very high, particularly in cities like London or Nottingham. Unfortunately, this is not financially feasible for my family alone.

This dream means the world to me. I am ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen, but I can’t do it without support. Mein Name ist Paula, ich bin 18 Jahre alt, und ich habe einen großen Traum: Ich möchte in Großbritannien Film studieren!

Schon als Kind bin ich mit meiner Familie um die Welt gereist, anstatt eine klassische Schule zu besuchen. Diese besondere Art des Aufwachsens hat mir nicht nur die Freiheit geschenkt, unterschiedlichste Länder und Kulturen kennenzulernen, sondern auch die Möglichkeit gegeben, unglaublich viel zu lernen. Auf diesen Reisen habe ich meine Leidenschaft für das Filmemachen entdeckt - und sie hat mich seitdem nicht mehr losgelassen.

Mit elf Jahren habe ich in Südafrika meinen ersten 30-minütigen Film auf die Beine gestellt - von der Idee über das Drehbuch und die Regie bis hin zum Schnitt habe ich alles selbst gemacht. Damals wusste ich schon ganz genau: Das möchte ich mal beruflich machen.

Seitdem habe ich jede Gelegenheit genutzt, um dazuzulernen. Ich habe an verschiedensten Kursen teilgenommen, Praktika gemacht und an Filmsets mitgearbeitet - sowohl im Independent-Bereich als auch bei professionellen Produktionen. Eine besonders prägende Erfahrung war meine Arbeit als Regieassistentin bei einem Filmprojekt in Wien im Herbst 2024. Dabei habe ich nicht nur enorm viel gelernt, sondern auch gespürt, wie sehr mir die kreative Zusammenarbeit im Team gefällt.

Nun habe ich die Chance, ab September in England zu studieren. Ich wurde bereits von mehreren Unis angenommen! Für mich wäre das ein riesiger Schritt: Dabei geht es mir nicht vorrangig um einen Abschluss (Bachelor in Filmmaking), sondern um die Möglichkeit, mich weiterzuentwickeln, mit anderen Kreativen zusammenzuarbeiten und meine Perspektiven als Filmemacherin zu erweitern.

Großbritannien spielt in meinem Leben schon seit einigen Jahren eine besondere Rolle. 2019 und 2020 habe ich mit meiner Familie in der Nähe von London gelebt - eine Zeit, die mich sehr geprägt hat. Dort habe ich wöchentlich Theater gespielt und eine Filmschule besucht. Die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der britischen Filmbranche, die Kultur und meine Liebe zur englischen Sprache machen Großbritannien für mich zum idealen Ort, um meinen Weg weiterzugehen.

Leider ist das Filmstudium in Großbritannien sehr teuer. Die Studiengebühren liegen bei etwa 60.000 Euro für drei Jahre. Dazu kommen die Lebenshaltungskosten, die in Städten wie London oder Nottingham sehr hoch liegen. Leider kann meine Familie diese Summe nicht alleine aufbringen.

Deshalb starte ich diese Kampagne: Ich suche Unterstützung, um meinen Traum Wirklichkeit werden zu lassen. Jede einzelne Spende – ganz gleich, wie klein oder groß – bringt mich meinem Ziel ein Stück näher.
