Raising money for Rebecca Usher

Rebecca Usher is a registered nurse at Dewsbury District Hospital and has worked there since she was 18 years old. She has been dedicated to her role and would describe it as her dream job. She is a popular nurse and is adored by so many of her colleagues and friends that she has made along the way.

On Sunday 4th April, whilst Rebecca was on duty, she began feeling poorly. She complained of a high temperature and she felt extremely tired and weak. On Tuesday 7th April, on her 38th Birthday, she was admitted to Pinderfields Hospital via Ambulance. She was diagnosed with COVID-19, Pneumonia and Sepsis and was placed in an induced coma, on a ventilator in ICU. The news was absolutely devastating for her family and friends. The next few days brought even more bad news, she began to suffer from multi organ failure, her kidneys had began to fail and she was placed on dialysis. Rebecca was critical.

The days that followed were unbearable for all those that loved her, especially as no one could be by her side. Her family put all their trust in the doctors and nurses on the ICU ward and they waited patiently for updates. Rebecca received so much love and support from all that knew her, the huge amount of messages of encouragement just showed how adored she was. Even those that didn't know her but had read her story started praying for her and sending wishes. The claps for the NHS on a Thursday night were done with Becky in our thoughts.

Then, there was a glimmer of hope, she had made some slight improvements. Her kidneys were beginning to come back to normal and she required less oxygen on the ventilator, fantastic! However, this good news was then followed by another devastating blow. Her heart condition that she had suffered from since her early 20's had caused major complications.

All the family could do was wait, hope, pray, anything to try and make her get better. The doctors and nurses were fantastic, they never gave up on her. Rebecca was on the ventilator in an induced coma for 3 weeks. She faught all the way and she never gave up. She knew she had her little 6 year old daughter to fight for.

The family began receiving updates that Rebecca was making slight improvements again, but they didn't want to get their hopes up to early. However, their strong, stubborn and determined Becky defied all odds and made it through. She was given a tracheostomy, she was slowly woken up from the coma and she eventually came off the ventilator. After nearly 5 critical weeks in ICU, she was moved onto a Coronary Care Ward. No amount of thank you's are enough for the amazing staff that saved her life.

Her family, friends and hundreds of her supporters are elated, relieved and thankful that Rebecca is now awake and on the road to recovery. She still has a long way to go and has lot's of grueling physiotherapy and rehabilitation to go through, but the Becky we all know and love so dearly is back!

We'd like to be able to raise a little bit of money so Becky can treat herself when she finally feels herself again. She has wanted to take her little girl on holiday for so long, the money raised could go towards her being able to make new memories with her princess.

So that's Rebecca's amazing story, thank you for taking the time to read.
